District Executive Director


The YMCA of Greater Houston is currently seeking a dynamic, cause-driven leader to serve as the District Executive Director directly responsible for our two Y’s located in Katy as well as oversee the Fort Bend Family Y and the TW Davis Family Y all located in West Houston. The Katy Y’s have a combined budget of $5M, one volunteer board and serve 3400 membership units at Monty Ballard Y and 1800 membership units at Mark A. Chapman Y with potential for membership growth. To support the work in the community, the Katy Y’s raise $510,000 which includes $150,000 from the Turkey Dash Race on Thanksgiving Day that boasts 5000+ participants, 900 volunteers and vendors. The Katy Y’s also support a large Safety Around Water program. This position will directly supervise a Director of Operations for the Katy Y’s and Community Center Executive Director over the Fort Bend and TW Davis Y’s. These two Y’s raise $622,000 to support the work in those communities. Although the TW Davis Y is not operational, the Y is still present in the community. In addition, it is currently in a capital campaign to raise funds for complete facility renovation.

The District Executive Director oversees the total operation of a YMCA center, including the member experience, local grass-roots marketing, youth & family programs, volunteer and staff development, financial development, community relations and collaborations with community partners. Key areas of responsibility include build/maintain robust center advisory boards, grow the assigned center’s Annual Giving Campaign, build community relationships/partnerships, communicate and coordinate effectively between center program lines and Association program line leaders. Work within a centralized, matrix model of staffing with departments such as: Facilities, Out of School Time, Sports, Child Watch and Healthy Living. Also provides leadership to additional centers. Serves on a Center Leadership Team with other District Executive Directors and Vice Presidents.

Essential Functions:
Leads with inclusion and ensures all staff members and participants feel welcome and are treated with dignity and respect. Builds a staff and volunteer team that reflects the diversity of the community.
Develops and directs high quality member engagement strategies and programs that support center and Association mission, goals, and strategies.
Coordinates the development of the Center Board and committees. Provides guidance to Executive Director and/or Director of Operations with their Center Board strategies.
Directs the financial development activities of the center within the district to ensure goals are met.
Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery area.
Oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of staff. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
Develops, manages, and monitors the center operating budget and meet or exceeds budget targets.
Supports the near and long term capital development projects slated for the district.
Leads district and direct reports through innovation and reinvention of the YMCA programs and services in response to shift market and community needs resulting in an annual operating plan.
Ensures the safety and maintenance of high quality facilities, grounds, and
Directs center marketing and communication efforts.
Serves as a member of YMCA management and supports the overall objectives of the Association.
Supervises a district of centers and works in collaboration with other District Exeuctives and Vice Presidents to achieve operational goals.
Provides appropriate leadership to assigned centers in the following areas:
Ensures each center balance its budget;
Provides immediate, on-site guidance and support if centers are under performing;
Ensures centers meet/exceed fundraising goals;
Ensures centers provide quality programs and services that engage members;
Ensures centers have effective volunteer boards.

Bachelor’s degree in human services, social services, business or equivalent.
Five or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other not-for-profit agency.
Ability to direct total operations through volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of center budget, marketing and public relations, and program development.
Experience in management and development of volunteer involvement; ability to recruit top community leaders.
Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.
Ability to quickly build rapport and develop effective relationships with members, volunteers, program prospects and others to achieve goals.
Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
YMCA Multi-Team or Center Leader certification preferred.
CPR and First Aid certifications may be required.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


Directly supervises exempt employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; reviewing and approving timesheets; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; monitoring and updating all required staff certifications; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


Skills are essential in all of the Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access. Ability to use these programs to lighten work load, develop reports and to automate procedures is very necessary. Ability to diagnose basic PC problems and to communicate those problems is very important.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Travel is primarily local between assigned centers during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
