We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Pathology Lab Helper.
In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for assisting staff members with the day to day operation of the Laboratory, by providing daily maintenance, clinical, and clerical support. Responsible for maintaining a clean and well-organized work area in the gross room and histology laboratory. Filing of specimen blocks, distribution of slides, changing chemical solutions and assisting pathologists, house staff, management, and technicians in multiple clerical tasks. Maintenance of records and programming of instruments under supervision.
Assisting pathologists, house staff, management, and technicians with requests/projects as directed.
Proficient and accurate use of omni-trax when directed and necessary.
Daily reconciliation of specimens and/or worklists.
Preparation of histology trash retainment and discard.
Preparation of hazardous waste for weekly pick up. Transportation of hazardous waste and expired chemical to vault as necessary.
Under direct supervision completes cassette loading and programming of tissue processors.
Assists with organization and distribution of slides to house staff and pathologists.
Discard specimens, prepare for weekly pickup or transport to loading dock as necessary.
Responsible for all assigned clerical duties associated with the Histology & Gross Room .Under supervision assist with completing daily, weekly and monthly QC and temperature charts. Complete daily morgue census.
Load and unload, processor, stainers and coverslippers under supervision. Assists in changing reagents under supervision.
Filing specimen blocks for short term and long term storage.
Inventory Control: Monitor inventory, stock and maintain laboratory supplies alerting supervisor to reorder when needed. Dating of supplies and solutions. Ensure all necessary supplies are organized and stocked for operations in both areas.
Maintenance: Maintaining a clean and organized work area in the gross room and histology lab. Responsible for monitoring, cleaning and sterilize (decontaminate) laboratory equipment, glassware, benchtops, and instruments. Preparing and removing sharp containers when full.
High School Degree with science courses (biology and/or chemistry).
Some exposure to laboratory assistance and maintenance (accessioning not included).
Good communication skills.
Excellent computer skills.
Associate’s Degree with coursework in chemistry, biology or related science.
6+ months of Anatomic Pathology laboratory (gross room and/or histology laboratory) experience.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
