This is a part-time role that supports the adult Spanish classes from 6:15-8:45pm on Tuesday evenings at the Harris YMCA.
Under the direction of the Community Development Director and Spanish Classes for Adults Coordinator, and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, this position is responsible for the curriculum development (where required), lesson planning, and teaching of the Spanish Classes for Adults classes. The teacher will also be responsible for the development and implementation of all classroom activities, testing and registration of the students, following the guidelines agreed upon by the teacher and coordinator. The Spanish Classes for Adults teacher is responsible for enriching the adult student’s social, physical, emotional, intellectual, and mental development in the program.
Teach, develop the curriculum (where required), and prepare lesson plans for the Spanish Classes for Adults classes.
Be responsible for the supervision, safety, and well-being of the Spanish Classes for Adults program participants.
Carry out the lesson plans, following the guidelines agreed upon by the teacher and coordinator, and communicating concerns to the Coordinator as needed.
Actively participate in the activities.
Take attendance of Spanish Classes for Adults students, and notify Coordinator of any several day absences.
Attend and participate in all staff meetings.
Uphold facility maintenance and cleanliness standards.
Work with volunteers, clearly communicate needs, to utilize in program (where required).
Ensure proper set up and break down of assigned rooms on a daily basis and maintaining a neat and clean appearance of room including equipment and supplies.
Present quality image through staff attire and interaction with other YMCA employees, volunteers and membership.
To perform satisfactorily the applicant should bring the following skills and/or experiences to this position:
2-year college degree.
Native or near native Spanish speaker.
Must be able to communicate well with students, parents, and volunteers, be a team player, and have good leadership skills.
Prior experience in teaching Spanish or equivalent university preparation.
Knowledge in theories of language acquisition.
General knowledge of YMCA programs, philosophies, and objectives.
Ability to represent the YMCA in a mature and professional manner.
Understand and uphold Christian ethics and their relationship to YMCA philosophies.
Must be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others.
Must be able to relate well with students and ALWAYS promote and environment conducive to learning.
Will acquire CPR/First Aid Certification within thirty days of employment.

Implementing all of the above activities should produce a quality Spanish Classes for Adults program that promotes the positive growth and nurturing of the students by meeting individual development needs. The ability to retain participants in the Spanish Classes for Adults program. The increase in the numerical scores achieved from the use of evaluation forms and tests. This program should foster community relations and involve more families in the total YMCA program by creating a warm, friendly, nurturing atmosphere and reflecting a positive image.Show more
